Five Nights at Freddy’s is getting a movie and saying that it’s a mistake is a gross understatement. There’s no telling if the project will actually be put together just yet, since the script hasn’t even been written. However, it’s been picked up by Warner Bros., so we already have a powerful studio behind the production.
This is bittersweet news. On the sweet side, I’m happy to see these games get love and attention. It’s a platform that gives way to a multitude of creative interpretation. On the bitter side… It’s Hollywood, and Hollywood thrives on violating the things that we love. It’s scary to think that the original source material will mostly be butchered. Much like how The Hunger Games movies focus more on the story’s love triangle than rebelling against a corrupt government, I’m afraid that a Five Nights at Freddy’s film will focus more on cheap jump scares than the brilliant back story, which is the sweet nectar of the original games.
I believe that Scott Cawthon’s creative ideas will get shoved aside in favor of crappy, quick cash-making horror cliches, even though it’s been stated that Cawthon will have a role in production.
My ultimate prediction: The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie will be on par with Seed of Chucky.
I hope that I will be wrong, but given the history of video games being translated into movies… Well, we all saw what happened to poor Mario and his movie…
