Dear World,
It is with great regret that I inform you that SEGA has announced that they will not be setting up a booth at E3 for 2015. In an announcement to GameInformer, SEGA stated that they will be taking this time to “…focus on the restructure and relocation to southern California.”
While SEGA will not have a booth by any “official” means, they will still be in attendance in some capacity to showcase some of their games, merchandise, and other products at various booths. A SEGA representative said,
“With the majority of our bigger titles launching later in 2015/2016, particularly those from our AAA studios Relic Entertainment, Sports Interactive, and Creative Assembly, we are concentrating our efforts for some of these major announcements after our relocation.”
While these future announcements will make big waves I’m sure, but they will pale in comparison to the capabilities of a big press booth and conference at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo. I find it beyond disappointing to hear this news, but one can only hope that they’ll come back stronger than ever for 2016.
SEGA’s business structure has changed quite a bit over the last decade or so. SEGA seems to be leaning more towards publishing games these days. In January of 2015, SEGA announced their intention to focus on mobile and PC games, leaving their status for console game development up in the air. Sad news indeed, one that hopefully doesn’t spell the end of SEGA as I remember them from my youth.
Sincerely,
Nerd Bacon
