Street Fighter V has a story to tell, according to a new press release and accompanying trailer released by Capcom today.
The upcoming fighter is set to feature individual character stories that will give players insight into the different motivations of the sixteen world warriors featured in Street Fighter V, as well as flesh out the relationships that they have with each other.
Street Fighter V’s character stories will be brought to life by long time illustrator, Bengus, whose work has been featured throughout the rich history of the Street Fighter franchise.
What’s intriguing however is the announcement of what’s being called a “cinematic story expansion” which will be a free DLC add-on that will be released in June of 2016. According to Capcom, the cinematic story expansion will offer an expanded narrative of the event that took place between Street Fighter’s III and IV and is described as “first time in franchise history that fans will be able to play through this type of cinematic story experience in a Street Fighter game.”
The news of an expanded cinematic story for Street Fighter V is in line with comments that Capcom producer Matt Dahlgren made in response to whether or not Street Fighter V would mimic the innovations in narrative pioneered by fellow fighting series, Mortal Kombat.
“I can’t reveal specifics on our story, but I can say we are going to be doing things differently this time around, […] We’re definitely paying attention to what our competitors are doing and want to raise the bar.”
In other Street Fighter V news, Capcom also announced the dates for the fourth and final online beta for the game.
Players who have pre-ordered either the PlayStation 4 or PC version of the game will get one last chance to put Capcom’s online servers to the test on January 30th and 31st.
Street Fighter V will launch world-wide on February 16th.
