The next iteration of the Super Smash Bros series will headline Nintendo’s E3 2018 lineup, the company announced Thursday evening.
Nintendo will showcase Super Smash Bros, as well as a number of other Nintendo Switch titles that are set to launch in 2018 as part of their traditional Nintendo Direct video presentation, which is scheduled for Tuesday June 12th, at 12 PM EST. Nintendo also stated that games that were set to launch after 2018 would be “featured at a later date.”
The Switch version of Super Smash Bros will also be prominently featured as part of the Nintendo Treehouse stream, which will begin immediately following the Nintendo Direct, and will run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during E3 2018.
Furthermore, top players from around the world will get their chance to rumble during the Super Smash Bros Invitational, which will also air live during the evening of June 12th. This will be a key event, as it will be the first chance that the Smash faithful will get to see the game in a competitive setting. We’ll also likely get to see a good chunk of the roster, as well as find out when 2018 the title will launch.
Other Nintendo E3 2018 plans include the Splatoon 2 World Championship event, which begins at 6:30 PM EST.
It’s interesting to note Nintendo’s affirmation that the games featured in their Nintendo Direct presentation would be releasing in 2018. While Nintendo usually does a good job of showcasing titles releasing in the near future when at all possible, we thought there would still be a chance that title like Metroid Prime 4 would have some sort of presence during the event. Their clear statement that games beyond 2018 would be shown later seems to indicate the contrary.
