The upcoming enhanced revision to Nintendo’s wonder hybrid system is internally known as the Nintendo Switch S, according to sources reporting to NerdBacon.
While there has not been confirmation that Nintendo Switch S, (commonly referred to as the Nintendo Switch Pro) will be the final name of the product once it arrives next year, it’s very interesting to note that the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI was reintroduced at last month’s Tokyo Game Show as Dragon Quest XI S.

Dragon Quest series director, Yuji Horii noted during a presentation during TGS that the “S” in Dragon Quest XI S had multiple meanings
“According to Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii, among the meanings of the “S” in the title are “Switch,” “Special,” “Shaberu” (Speaking), and “Seiyuu” (Voice Actor).” – Gematsu
Hidden among the list of explanations given as to the origin of the letter “S” in Nintendo’s version of Dragon Quest XI is the fact that the game is being developed for the new Nintendo Switch S. It’s an interesting twist considering Dragon Quest XI was the first title officially announced for Nintendo’s system, back when the system was still known as NX.
This also lines up with information NerdBacon and internet reporter Marcus Sellars originally reported in August concerning Nintendo’s plans for an update to the Nintendo Switch; namely, the possibility that certain third party games would be available exclusively for the enhanced hardware.
“Developers have a lot to gain from a beefier machine and would be more likely to support creating games that ran exclusively on the Switch Pro.”
Behind the scenes, Nintendo is adopting a similar approach for the Nintendo Switch product line as Apple has done with the various versions of their iPhone.
The original Switch which launched in 2017 would serve as a “base” version of the Switch and would be able to run most titles, while the Nintendo Switch S would be a premium device that would be able to boost the performance of most games, while also running certain exclusive titles designed specifically to take advantage of the extra horse power of the Switch S.
This would also afford Nintendo the opportunity to release iterative versions of the Switch at a more rapid pace than the traditional five year console life-cycle. This new approach would also align Nintendo with Sony and Microsoft, who began the introduction of mid-generation refreshes with the introductions of the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X.
Nintendo is still likely to be readying an aggressive trade-in promotion with various retailers for players who want to trade in their original Switch units for the new Nintendo Switch S. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils Amie made a special appearance at this year’s GameStop managers conference and likely met with top executives of the company to solidify Nintendo Switch S promotional plans; however, that can not be confirmed at this time.

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal shined a floodlight on Nintendo’s future plans by reporting that the company was readying an upgrade to the Nintendo Switch system. Earlier in August, NerdBacon originally broke the news that Nintendo was developing the new hardware upgrade for launch in 2019, and provided details on aspects such as the custom NVIDIA GPU that will be powering the machine.
Nintendo has not commented on the existence of the Nintendo Switch S.
