Amazon Acquires Twitch for Nearly $1 Billion

Twitch CEO Emmett Shear has confirmed that Amazon has agreed to purchase the popular online gaming streaming service, according to a post on Shear’s official blog.

“Today, I’m pleased to announce we’ve been acquired by Amazon. We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster.”

Sources from both The Information and the Wall Street Journal have said that the deal is valued at $970 million dollars.

Reports had circulated back in May that internet god Google was preparing to purchase Twitch, however that deal appears to have fallen through.

Amazon’s purchase of Twitch lends credence to reports that surfaced earlier in the year that Amazon was interested in developing a dedicated games machine. Earlier this year, they purchased Double Helix, which was the developer responsible for the revival of Killer Instinct for Xbox One in 2013.

No details on the deal have been released yet, but Shear did note in his blog post; “We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.”
