Last month I detailed a method through which it is possible replicate older, CD-based games, in particular the Dreamcast. If you haven’t read that article yet, you can find it here – How to Burn Games for the Sega Dreamcast and Other Consoles. I’d like to take this opportunity to expand upon some of what I’ve learned since then, specifically some experimentation with Atari Jaguar CD games and information regarding Apple’s Pippin.
Originally I was going to use anchors to link to different parts of this page, but as I found the section regarding burning AJCD games growing increasingly lengthy, I think it better to divide the information up across multiple posts.
- Burning Jaguar CD Games
- Burning Apple Pippin Games (coming soon)
- Using ImgBurn to Burn Games
Using the exact method in the aforementioned article, here’s what I’ve tested, here’s what I haven’t, and here’s what I suspect will work based on my own experiences with my own consoles.
Tested and Verified:
- Dreamcast
- Philips CD-i
- 3DO
- Neo Geo CD
- Atari Jaguar CD (see my separate article)
Confident:
- TurboGrafx CD / PC Engine Duo
- Sega CD
- Amiga CD32
- PlayStation
PlayStation 2(see note below)
What Doesn’t Work
- Sega Saturn (for reasons outlined in the previous article, though you can install a mod chip)
- GameCube (because these discs are tiny DVDs, not CDs)
- All other DVD-based consoles; 7th generation and onward.
- PlayStation 2 – The PlayStation 2 utilizes both CDs and DVDs depending on the size of the game. Burned games will work for either medium, but you’ll need to use something called Swap Magic. Swap Magic uses both software and a mechanical device to fool the PS2 into booting the burned disc. You can purchase Swap Magic from Amazon and other outlets, but there are multiple versions out there. Be sure to do some research onto what version of Swap Magic you need. All versions will come with the mechanical tool, but you’ll also need to account for whether you have an Original or Slim PS2. Also, two separate Swap Magic discs are available – one to boot CD-based games and the other to boot DVD-based games. I have used Swap Magic with some (but not complete) success.
