Castlevania Pachinko Spin-off Gets Dirty

Imagine for a moment that you are the head of one of Japan’s most storied video game companies. You have a huge library of classic titles that you can utilize as a vehicle for growth after a rough year, featuring the very public departure from your company of one of the industry’s most legendary creators.

How would you utilize that fantastic library as a way to earn some cash, as well as recapture your position in the good graces of the public at large?

If your answer was to license one of your games out to make a pachinko spin-off, then most people would consider that to be a reasonable move to make. If however, your answer is to license one of your games out to make an uncomfortably smutty pachinko game, then eyebrows are likely to be raised.

This is exactly what Konami is doing with Castlevania, as you can see in this NSFW trailer posted below.

The most disturbing aspect of the trailer for Castlevania fans, aside from the scantily clad lady that appears out of place within the lexicon of the Castlevania universe, is the bold proclamation that this Castlevania pachinko game will feature “Erotic Violence.” Yep, this is the major selling point for something that you would presumably only be able to play in a suitably seedy public pachinko hall, surrounded by like-minded erotic violence fans.

Whelp...this is happening...

Whelp…this is happening…

Konami has made waves among the gaming faithful this year with the reported departure of the renowned director Hideo Kojima, with the company recently going so far as to remove Kojima’s name from the box art of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The pending separation between Konami and Kojima also led to the cancellation of the Kojima produced collaboration with film director Guillermo del Toro, Silent Hills.

While Konami allows the Castlevania name and theme’s to be used in this surprising new direction, gamers with a thirst for something retaining the spirit of the Castlevania franchise can at least take solace in the fact that long-time series director Koji Igarashi’s recently revealed project, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, was recently funded through Kickstarter, and will provide players with an experience more akin to  the classic, non-erotically violent Castlevania games of old.
