The sweltering heat of July has always greeted fighting game fans like a warm, sweaty hug.
That’s because the heat of July brings with it the grandest fighting game tournament of them all, Evolution. (Evo for short.)
Evo 2016 kicks off today in Las Vegas, with tens of thousands of warrior’s from around the world converging on sin city to determine who is the best of the best.
For those who haven’t been following, Evo 2016 is the premiere fighting game tournament that has been going strong in various forms for twenty years. This year’s event will feature tournaments held across nine different titles:
- Street Fighter V
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Super Smash Bros. For Wii U
- Tekken 7: Fated Retribution
- Guilty Gear XRD: Revelator
- Mortal Kombat XL
- Killer Instinct
- Pokken Tournament
- Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3
Evo 2016 will also be notable as this will be the first year that part of the event will be aired on live television. The main event, Street Fighter V‘s top 8, will be broadcast around the world on ESPN2 on Sunday evening, making Evo 2016 a potentially momentous moment for the fighting game community, as well as e-sports as a whole.
