The drama surrounding the release of legendary game creator Hideo Kojima from his long time employer Konami has finally reached its climax.
Kojima has announced the formation of a brand new studio, Kojima Productions, as well as a partnership with Sony which will see the studio’s first game published exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
“Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that it has signed an agreement with Kojima Productions, a newly formed studio by the acclaimed game designer Hideo Kojima, to develop its first software title as a console exclusive to the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) computer entertainment system.” Said a press release from Sony, announcing the new partnership.
Sony Computer Entertainment’s CEO, Andrew House also released a special video to herald Kojima’s official arrival within the Sony camp.
This partnership marks the end of an unpleasant falling out between Kojima, who is well known for his work as the creator and director of the Metal Gear series, and Kojima.
Kojima’s internal development group was shut down and his name removed from promotional material of this year’s Metal Gear finale, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Furthermore, projects that had previously assigned to Kojima, such as the hotly anticipated revival of Silent Hill, Silent Hills, were cancelled.
The most recent indignity suffered by Mr. Kojima was his being barred from attending the 2015 Video Game Awards because his contract with Konami was still active on the date of the awards show.
While we don’t have the specifics of what transpired between the management of Konami and Mr. Kojima, today’s announcement provides a clean slate for one of this industry’s most remarkable minds.
