Life is about to get extra messy.
That’s because Nintendo has announced that their inky arena-shooter, Splatoon 2 will be splattering its way onto the Nintendo Switch on July 21st, 2017, the company announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation on Wednesday.
Complementing the release date announcement was the revelation of a new game mode called Salmon Run.
This new mode plays out like the Splatoon 2 version of a horde mode, seen in a number of modern first-person shooters, where players have to survive against wave after wave of endless enemies.
Splatoon 2’s Salmon Run sees four players joining together to form a team as they so in the signature Turf War mode, however, that team is then whisked away to a remote island, where they must battle against a never-ending onslaught of salmonid creatures, as well as boss characters.
Defeating the enemy horde’s will net you power eggs, which you are supposed to be able to trade in for rewards, however, Nintendo didn’t provide any hints as to what those rewards would be.
Nintendo also noted that communication between team members will be a key factor to victory in Splatoon 2’s Salmon Run. This gives us a hint that the online service which was announced for the Nintendo Switch back in January may be nearing a launch, as there is currently no method of communicating in-game with other players on the hybrid console.
Rounding out the Splatoon 2 news from Wednesday is the announcement of more Amiibo’s. A new Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, and Squid will be launching alongside the game in July.
