Excellent news folks! The highly loved yet nearly forgotten Nintendo World Championships competition is back for another go-around. The last time Nintendo held the competition was in 1990, which by my calculations was… um… carry the 1… yes. Just as I thought… WAY TOO LONG AGO! I, for one, am very excited to see this event return. The 1990 Nintendo World Championships was a very popular gaming event that yielded the one of the most valuable NES cartridges on the market (the gold cartridge of the same name). Fans clamored for another competition for years but that eventually faded away.
Nintendo will be releasing more information regarding the Championships, but what we do know so far is that Nintendo fans can compete at select Best Buy stores across the country on May 30th. Winners will advance to a multi-round tournament at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on June 14th. The championships will be streamed live in addition to hosting seating for an in-person audience.
We can only speculate which games will be featured, but the Nerd Bacon experts think we’ll definitely see Super Smash Bros. Wii U and possibly Mario Kart 8. What games would you like to see? Rad Racer? Tetris? Super Mario Bros.? Hopefully we’ll find out sooner than later! What a great way to kick off E3 2015!
