Folks, it’s that magical time of year again; yes, it’s time for the release of a new Assassin’s Creed game. And it seems that this time around we’re getting a two for one deal, but more on that later.

On the 19th, Kotaku leaked stills of a possible new Assassin’s Creed game that were given to them by an anonymous source. Ubisoft responded to the leak by posting a teaser trailer on their official blog and titled the post “Let Them Eat Cake”

“Let Them Eat Cake” is in reference to Queen Marie Antoinette of France who angered many people by uttering this phrase when she was informed that her subjects had no bread to eat during a famine in France in the mid to late eighteenth century. This infamous quote is oftentimes associated with the French Revolution and, so it would seem, that this is where our new assassin will thrive.

Being set in the French Revolution puts the story line a few years after Assassin’s Creed 3 ends. There is not much known about the new assassin, but I have a feeling that we’ve seen the end of the Kenway line with Edward Kenway in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. Ubisoft has done two separate games, three main characters, and two books focusing on the Kenway line, so it is probably time to move onto another group of assassins.

One major thing to note about Assassin’s Creed: Unity is that it will only be available for next-gen consoles and PC. Assassin’s Creed: Unity will release just in time for the holidays, but no official release date has been set by Ubisoft.

Coming back to the “and more” part of this roundup, it’s pretty well accepted among the gaming community that there will be a second Assassin’s Creed game coming out this fall that’s codenamed Assassin’s Creed: Comet. At the moment, any information regarding Assassin’s Creed: Comet should be taken with a grain of salt since Ubisoft hasn’t publicly confirmed or denied anything. That being said, popular speculation (spurred by Gameblog and Kotaku) is that Comet will follow the story of a Templar sailor in the Atlantic shortly after the end of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.  Kotaku’s sources say that “Haytham Kenway and Adewalé will make appearances, among other returning AC characters”. Unlike Unity, Assassin’s Creed: Comet is speculated to be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Without a doubt, there will more information and hype to come in the coming months, but only time will tell how well these games will stack up against the other Assassin’s Creed games.

  • I know that the Assassins creed dev team is HUGE (roughly 100-150 core and nearly 1000 total) but they just need to take a break for a month, or 2, or 6. I enjoy AC games as much as the next, but they need some rest and creative thinking time. With Unity being only next gen, I expect some serious thought going into it and something that clearly shows it couldn’t be accomplished on this gen. Rant done for now.
