This past August 23rd, 2016 was a historical milestone for the gaming industry.
That’s because on that day, 25 years ago, arguably the most influential and one of the most beloved consoles of all-time arrived on the shores of North America. That’s right – I’m talking about the incomparable Super Nintendo!
For old fogey’s like me, it’s hard to believe that 25 years have already passed since the launch of the SNES. For those that were a little too young to appreciate the SNES, you may not realize it, but many of the games that would be released on that console have had a hand in shaping the games that we play today.
One could say that while developers learned the technical aspects of development on earlier systems like the Atari 2600, and learned how to expand their concepts and think outside the box with the NES; the SNES was where game designers went from creating amusements, to creating art.
Some of the games released during this era read like a who’s who list of the greatest and most influential video games ever made.
Super Mario World, Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan) Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, etc. These were all titles that redefined and reshaped how we played, thought, and even felt about video games. The lessons learned in the designs of some of these games, are lessons that are still being echoed in development today.
NerdBacon is proud to honor the legacy of this monumental console by devoting the entire month of September to special anniversary coverage of the SNES.
