Sony Officially Unveils The PlayStation 4 Pro

The lid has been lifted, the curtain raised – all secrets that once were (poorly) hidden are now out in the open for all to see.

Sony has finally shown off the “Neo” version of the PlayStation 4: PlayStation 4 Pro.

This new, beefier version of the PlayStation 4 is designed to take advantage of HDR and 4k resolution televisions. Its GPU (graphics processing unit) is twice as powerful as the one on the standard PS4, the CPU clock rate has been doubled, and the unit is rounded out with a 1 TB hard drive.

Here it is! The PlayStation 4 Pro

Here it is! The PlayStation 4 Pro

The PlayStation 4 Pro is meant to compliment and coexist within the PlayStation ecosystem, rather than replace the original PlayStation 4 unit. Games currently in development for the PlayStation 4 Pro are being designed to run on both the new hardware, and the original PlayStation 4 model, albeit without the array of visual improvements the new hardware will allow.

A firmware update, which will release next week, will allow all PlayStation 4 models to take advantage of HDR resolutions.

Sony showed off several previously announced games that are set to take full advantages of the increased performance that PlayStation 4 Pro will offer.

New footage of Insomniac’s upcoming Spiderman showed off incredible details in textures, as well as a breath taking view of New York City.

We also saw PlayStation 4 Pro footage of Ubi Soft’s For Honor, Square Enix’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Rise of the Tomb Raider – all of which will release with enhanced visuals on the PlayStation 4 Pro.

We also got to see approximately two and a half minutes of new game play footage from Horizon: Zero Dawn running on the PlayStation 4 Pro.

Aloy, the heroine in the highly anticipated post-apocalyptic/stone-age epic, moved about the vastly lusher jungle environments tracking down gigantic robotic beasts. The frame rate of the game felt much more fluid and smooth. Little details like the way her hair moved appeared much more natural.

Sony will release the PlayStation 4 Pro on November 11th, 2016 and it will retail for $399.
